Master By Coursework

The Master by Coursework in Urban and Regional Planning at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is a professionally oriented graduate program designed to develop practical, analytical, and policy-relevant planning competencies. The program applies the 2022 MURP Curriculum, which emphasizes integrated planning approaches, innovative problem-solving, collaborative practice, and evidence-based policymaking.

The curriculum is structured around two core components: Planning Studios and Planning Methods, Techniques, and Processes. These components are organized into three interconnected clusters (theory, studio, and thesis)and delivered over a standard study period of four semesters (two years). Students are required to complete 45 credit units, comprising 14 compulsory courses and 3 elective courses.

To support focused professional development, the Master by Coursework program offers three concentration areas that reflect key spatial planning scales: Neighborhood Planning, Urban Planning, and Regional Planning. Each concentration includes mandatory courses in planning studios, economics, and development management, ensuring coherence between theory, practice, and policy analysis. Elective courses allow students to deepen their expertise and directly support their thesis research.

The program also provides optional internship opportunities, enabling students to gain concentration-specific professional experience through partnerships with public institutions, private organizations, and scholarship providers. Graduates of the Master by Coursework program are equipped for careers in planning practice, policy formulation, consultancy, and development agencies. Completion of a publishable master’s thesis is required for graduation.

MURP curriculum is structured to match the competence profile with current issues, trends, and user’s needs. There are some criteria that needs to be met in order to provide good urban and regional planning education to the students.

The 2022 curriculum defines the concentration based on spatial ontology (Neighborhood, Urban, and Regional). The concentration definition is based on actual planning issues and development sectors to ensure student’s abilities on each concentration. Students have the freedom to choose their own concentration based on their interests.

The curriculum map is structured to correlate vision-mission with the programme learning outcomes.
